There are freely chosen friendships and imposed partnerships. Although these discussions seem to be from a different time, you may remember that Qantas, a oneworld member and close partner of Emirates, was not really amused when Qatar Airways joined the alliance as well. And that relationship has never really evolved since then. But as Qatar Airways is also known for the fact that you should not mess around with them, they went on an concluded a close partnership, incl. at the FFP level, with Virgin Australia. Privilege Club members notably also earn status points on Virgin Australia flights. This might not be super relevant for the vast majority of Privilege Club members, but it sends a rather unfriendly signal to Qantas. And until December 06, Privilege Club members also earn double miles on all Virgin Australia flights (and these miles are now well Avios, meaning that they can be combined with points of other Avios-based programs).
